Queen Alexandra Elementary invites you to support and lead interactive projects throughout the entire school exploring themes around Aboriginal culture, environmental issues, science, and outdoor education. As a volunteer, you will work closely with students from one classroom (or group of classrooms) facilitating fun project activities using integrated arts, science, and social sciences. Over three days, you will work closely with the Queen Alexandra students and help them with their particular activities which may include field trips, lesson plans, art, drama, and physical exercise. This year the activities and projects will explore themes such as Aboriginal culture, climate change and ecology, science, and outdoor education.
By the end of the three days, Queen Alexandra students will have built positive relationships with you and be open to future possibilities for themselves. As inner city kids can often have a narrow outlook for their own futures, the hope is that by engaging with you through interactive activities the students might begin to imagine themselves continuing on to postsecondary education.
This is a whole school community project. The teams of UBC students will be working directly with students on a variety of projects. The project will usually be interactive and hands on, and allow the UBC students many opportunities to interact with the Queen Alexandra students.
