About the project

Join the team as a Green Machine Team Mentor!

The Green Machine Team Mentor will help a team of students from grades 4-7 at W.E. Kinvig Elementary design, assemble, and accessorize a vehicle made primarily from re-cycled and re-used components. The Mentor will guide the students through the design and assembly stages, and will help the students to personalize their vehicles using household and recycled items.

Scheduling 

Kick-off Orientation :

Saturday, February 3 from 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Project :

Monday, February 19 from 2:00pm - 5:30pm

Tuesday, February 20 from 2:00pm - 5:30pm 

Friday, February 23 from 2:00pm - 5:30pm

What you will do

  • Help the students to think of creative uses to use raw materials, and creative ways to assemble a vehicle
  • Guide the students through trials and errors to find ways to accomplish a challenging task
  • Sets up competition spaces and help run the final vehicle competition
  • Lead students in some structured activities at the start and end of each session
  • Help to set up and take down the project space at the start/end of each day.

Qualifications

  • Enthusiastic to work with Grade 4-7 students from a variety of cultural backgrounds
  • Imaginative and creative, willing to take risks
  • Enjoys making things
  • This volunteer position is appropriate for UBC students of all academic backgrounds, but if you have a passion for engineering and mechanics, this is an especially fun opportunity for you
