About the project

Thunderbird Elementary is a Kindergarten to Grade 7 school in East Vancouver and a long time community partner with the Reading Week Project. This year, UBC students will be teaching and engaging with students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 around different science concepts, with focus on biology and chemistry. This project aims to foster positive relationships with the elementary and UBC students through fun, hands-on activities. As a UBC student, you will be there to inspire and role model the importance of education, and giving back to one’s community.

Science concepts include: life cycles, exploration of matter, the theory of evolution, environment, solutions and mixtures.


Kick-off Orientation :

Saturday, February 3 from 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Project :

Monday, February 19 from 8:00am - 3:15pm

Tuesday, February 20 from 8:00am - 3:15pm

Wednesday, February 21 from 8:00am - 3:15pm

What you will do

  • Teach and supervise small to large group of Thunderbird students

  • Engage with, and inspire Thunderbird students in Science and through positive attitudes and behaviors

  • Role model to Thunderbird students the importance of higher education and of community engagement

  • Be an ambassador for the UBC community


  • Enthusiasm and interest in engaging with elementary students and Science
  • Ability to demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviors
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and with a range of individuals
  • Knowledge of basic science concepts is an asset but not required
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion and to manage potentially difficult situations
