Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall [FULL]

About the project

Before Powell Street, there was Japan Town. Japanese Hall, which has recently been recognized as a National Historic site, invites you to lead and support the marketing of the educational project called Historic Japan Town Walking Tour. This tour aims to educate people about Japanese Canadian history and lessons of social justice in the Downtown Eastside (DTES).

As a volunteer, you will learn about Japanese Canadian history from pre- and post-war eras and make history relevant to the present. You will also experience the walking tour with a community tour guide to learn about the DTES.

Over the course of the three days, you will first integrate and improve the content and scripts of the walking tour based on the specific target (i.e. elementary school students, high school students, and post-secondary school students) and later help develop the marketing plan by creating actual promotional material. The result will contribute to on-going walking tours and the Heritage & Educational outreach program.

By the end of the third day, you will have deepened your knowledge and have a better understanding of the hidden history of Vancouver.
