About the organization

The mandate of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House is to provide programming, and educational, leadership, social and recreational opportunities to residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The DTES NH embraces people of all ancestries, genders, ages and descriptions; annually welcoming almost 9,000 DTES residents in a community where 70% of our neighbours have low‐incomes, 700 are homeless and 5,000 are under-housed.Read more about Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House.

What you'll do

Community Drop-in - Program Helper

  • Prepare and serve food that is diverse and nutritious, and help with clean up at the end of your shift
  • Contribute to creating a respectful culture and welcoming space that belongs to the community
  • The Community Drop-in is the most attended of the NH’s programs and involves a number of activities related to nutrition and Right to Food
  • During this program, community members have the opportunity to mingle with other local residents and get involved as volunteers

Community Kitchen - Food Prep Helper

  • Work alongside a facilitator and community members to prepare nutritious food that will be served at the Community Drop-in the next day
  • Help with clean-up at the end of your shift

Family Drop-in - Food Prep Helper

  • Contribute to creating a respectful culture and welcoming space that belongs to the community
  • Support programming that emphasizes food literacy, healthy meal preparation, culinary exploration and urban farming practices
  • The families (children, youth and caregivers) who participate in the Family Drop-in work with staff and volunteers to farm our indoor and outdoor urban farm
  • Engage children through arts & crafts, music, and reading stories 

What you’ll get out of this experience

  • Learn about food justice, health promotion and the social determinants of health and how these are enacted through programs emphasizing food literacy, healthy meal preparation, culinary exploration, and urban farming practices
  • Gain hands-on experience in programs that work to mitigate the immediate effects of material poverty by providing access to healthy food, and also in the longer term as participants acquire the skills to prepare and grow nutritious food based on their socio-economic and housing realities
  • Hone your interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills and ability to work cross-culturally
