South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH) is a volunteer-driven, community service agency with a mission to make neighbourhoods better places to live. The organization responds to the needs and aspirations of its community members by providing services, programs, special events, facilities, and information to promote involvement and a spirit of community. What you'll do

Global Citizens Facilitator

  • Arrive at school site to brief with the Youth and Family Worker (YFW) and to set up the space prior to students' arrival
  • Prepare lesson plans on global and local issues (i.e. poverty, sustainability, etc.) and facilitate sessions to children grades 5 - 7 in an engaging and meaningful way
  • Be responsible for the attendance and supervision of children participants
  • Work with children participants to plan fundraisers in the term that is align to the We Day campaign by Free the Children
  • Plan, execute, and supervise meaningful and relevant field trips alongside the YFW
  • Maintain clear communication and contact with school's YF

Food Security Program Assistant 

  • Assist the Food Security Coordinator to develop, plan, and implement food and healthy eating elements into existing SVNH programs in accordance to the Good Food Principles
  • Attend community events to conduct outreach for South Vancouver Neighbourhood House, and to build networks and connections with other organizations
  • Promote awareness and knowledge of growing/preserving food
  • Assist with the Rooftop Garden construction and planting
  • Assist with community special events, such as Lunar New Year and Winter Festival

Learning Club Facilitator & Tutor

  • Arrive at the school site to brief with the Youth Settlement Counsellor and set up space prior to students’ arrival
  • Plan and facilitate games and icebreaker activities to promote communication skills with newcomer youth
  • Provide homework help and tutoring to individual youth during the academic portion of the program
  • Interact and build relationships with all newcomer youth who attend the program, particularly those with multiple barriers
  • Assist the Youth Settlement Counsellor in keeping attendance and collecting consent forms
  • Support newcomer youth with life skills (filling out forms, organizing schedule)
  • Plan, execute, and supervise meaningful and relevant field trips alongside the Youth Settlement Counsellor

Physical Literacy Assistant Programmer

  • Assist in programming (evaluate & implement physical literacy activities for school age children (K-12 yrs old) with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Work in partnership with the OSC staff team.
  • Set up and cleanup activities.

Preschool Assistant 

  • Supervising and guiding the children.
  • Setting up and cleaning up the program.
  • Ensuring the safety of the children during fieldtrips.

ESL Conversation Group Assistant

  • Prepare refreshment and set up tables and chairs before the group time
  • Assist staff in planning, delivering and evaluating program activities
  • Encourage group participants to engage in conversation activities
  • Provide language and emotional support needed
  • May facilitate conversation discussion activities during staff absence

Multicultural Women Peer Mentoring Assistant

  • Prepare refreshment and set up tables and chairs before the group time
  • Assist staff in planning, delivering and evaluating program activities
  • Provide language and emotional support needed
  • Encourage group participants to engage in program activities
  • May facilitate program activities already prepared for them during staff absence
  • May assist staff in creating digital stories about the programs

Adult Basic Computer Program Instructor

  • Assess students’ computer skill level and provide lesson plan according to their needs
  • Communicate with program coordinator for any concerns or changes
  • Set up computers before the class and clean up after

  • Experience teaching/tutoring youth various secondary school subjects

  • Gain knowledge of the immigrant and refugee social service sector

  • Learn about federal government policies and programs related to settling newcomers in Canada

Multicultural Women Peer Mentoring Assistant

  • Working in a non-profit setting with newcomers from diverse cultures and socioeconomic statuses

  • Building skills and experiences in using physical activities and icebreakers to facilitate conversation

  • Gain knowledge of barriers faced by newcomers

Adult Basic Computer Program Instructor

  • Working in a non-profit setting with newcomers to Canada from diverse cultures and socioeconomic statuses

  • Ability to facilitate and mentor computer skills to beginners

  • Working in a team environment

Qualifications

Global Citizens Facilitator

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience working with children age 9 - 12
  • Experience in supervising group activities
  • Experience in program/activity planning and facilitation
  • Strong time management skills
  • Knowledge of global and local social justice issues (i.e. poverty, clean water, sustainability)
  • Knowledge of the We Day Campaign and the Free the Children organization an asset
  • Knowledge of elementary school systems in Vancouver an asset

Food Security Program Assistant 

  • Educational background, experience, or passion for food security social issues
  • Comfortable facilitating programs for all ages (ranging from children to seniors)
  • Excellent collaboration, teamwork and ability to work independently
  • Strong time management skills
  • Food Safe an assett
  • First Aid and CPR-C an asset 

Learning Club Facilitator & Tutor

  • Minimum 6 months experience working with youth and children who have multiple barriers
  • Experience in public speaking and facilitating group games
  • Ability to communicate with youth who are learning English as an additional language
  • Comfortable initiating conversation with newcomer youth who have limited social skills
  • Commitment and consistency is required, volunteers cannot take weeks off to study for exams, volunteers will only be excused if their exam schedule conflicts with program time.
  • Adaptable and willing to think on your feet
  • Academic knowledge in the sciences, math, English, or social studies
  • Experience teaching and tutoring youth
  • Training in crisis intervention or basic counselling skills an asset
  • Fluency in an additional language an asset
  • Prior experience teaching/tutoring youth who are learning an additional language an asset
  • Familiarity with the secondary school curriculum in BC an asset
  • Knowledge of the complex barriers newcomer youth face an asset

  • Background knowledge of a physical/stretching exercise an asset (i.e. yoga, different types of dancing, etc.) an asset. 
  • Computer troubleshooting experience is an asset.

  • TBA day of week - 11:30am to 1:30pm - Cook Elementary school (once a week)
  • TBA day of week - 11:30am to 1:30pm - Waverley Elementary school (once a week)

Food Security Program Assistant 

  • Monday OR Wednesday; 3 hours per week

Learning Club Facilitator & Tutor

  • John Oliver Secondary School: Every Tuesday 3 to 5pm

Physical Literacy Assistant Programmer

  • September 19th – December 23rd, 2:30 – 5:30pm/6:00pm at SVNH, Fleming elementary and Waverley elementary
  • Once or twice/week

Preschool Assistant 

  • Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 12:00noon at 5888 Fraser Street, Vancouver

ESL Conversation Group Assistant

  • Wednesdays, 1pm-3pm

Multicultural Women Peer Mentoring Assistant

  • Fridays, 12:45pm - 3:15pm

Adult Basic Computer Program Instructor

  • Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30 OR 4-6pm Fridays 9:30-11:30 OR 5-7pm
  • Be available for at least one set of 3 consecutive computer classes (once a week for 3 weeks)
