About the organization

The Strathcona Community Centre is located in one of Vancouver's oldest neighbourhoods and has been serving the community for over 40 years. Strathcona Community Centre provides a variety of services ranging from a licensed childcare to a fitness centre and a wide variety of programming for people of all ages. What you'll do

After-School Adventures (Licensed Child Care)

  • Play games with children, lead arts and crafts activities, supervise children on the playground, serve snacks, and help to clean up

  • Act as a positive role model and help provide a safe, fun and dynamic program for kids age 5-12

Food Rescue Program 

  • Reduce food waste, share recipes and hone skills, while providing high quality, organic snacks for the After School Adventures program and their social enterprise, “the Pirate Kitchen Snack Bar”

  • Work together with other volunteers, including a group of men and women with developmental disabilities from the Choices Program

Backpack Program

(a healthy food market program for local families facing food insecurity)

  • Work and communicate in a team setting

  • Choose between the following:

    • Pack fresh produce and dried goods for program families and helping with occasional food preparation

    • Set up, facilitate, and clean up the Backpack Program Market during which food is distributed to families in a fun, dignified and engaging environment

Breakfast Program

  • Work in a fast-paced kitchen while assisting the breakfast coordinator to prepare and serve large quantities of breakfast foods for elementary students and their families

  • Mentor Breakfast Buddy student volunteers and help them acquire nutrition, food safe and food prep skills

Gardening Program

  • Assist community centre staff and programs to maintain and continue to develop the Sunshine Patch garden just outside of the community centre

  • Potential to help lead childcare groups in gardening activities

Basketball Program / Soccer Program

  • Help with either the Strathcona basketball program clinic and elementary programs or the Strathcona youth soccer program

Translations

  • Help translate written documents into Cantonese, Vietnamese or Spanish

  • Attend programs as an interpreter for speakers of Cantonese, Vietnamese or Spanish

  • Increase your understanding and engagement with culturally diverse members of the Strathcona community
  • Gain experience with issues surrounding food security and equitable food access within the Downtown Eastside

Breakfast Program

  • Develop your communication and decision-making skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Increase your understanding and engagement with culturally diverse members of the Strathcona community
  • Gain experience with issues surrounding food security and equitable food access within the Downtown Eastside
  • Hands-on experience in a busy kitchen environment

Gardening Program

  • Experience maintaining a public garden
  • Learn about managing groups of children as well as working with children with special needs (depending on your interests/focus)

Basketball Program / Soccer Program

  • Experience coaching basketball or soccer
  • Learn about managing groups of children and youth
  • Hone your leadership, interpersonal and communication skills

Translations

  • Experience translating and interpreting
  • Increased understanding and engagement with culturally diverse members of the Strathcona community

Requirements

  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check

Qualifications

After-School Adventures (Licensed Child Care)

  • Experience working with children and openness to working with children with special needs

  • Patience, compassion, and a willingness to learn

Food Rescue Program 

  • Experience and/or love for food

  • Openness to working with adults with special needs

Backpack Program

(a healthy food market program for local families facing food insecurity)

  • Ability to speak Cantonese, Vietnamese, and/or Spanish

Breakfast Program

  • Experience working with children and/or youth

  • Food prep experience

  • Ability to speak Cantonese, Vietnamese, and/or Spanish

Gardening Program

  • Experience or interest in learning about gardening

Basketball Program / Soccer Program

  • Experience playing and coaching basketball or soccer

Translations

  • Proficiency in a second language (Cantonese, Vietnamese and Spanish are most frequently needed)

Food Rescue Program 

  • Thursdays  11am - 2pm

Backpack Program

Choose between:

  • Thursdays  5pm - 7pm (Packing food)
  • Fridays  12:45pm – 4:45pm (Backpack market - we can arrange for shifts if volunteers cannot attend the full 4 hours)

Breakfast Program

  • Mondays  8am-9am
  • Tuesdays  8am-9am
  • Wednesdays  8am-9am
  • Thursdays  8am-9am
  • Fridays  8am-9am

Gardening Program

We can accommodate the availability of interested students

  • Tuesdays 3:15pm - 5pm (soccer program)
  • Wednesdays 3:15pm - 5pm (soccer program)
  • Saturdays 9am – 1pm (basketball program)
