About the organization

Writers' Exchange literacy mentors get kids excited about reading, writing, and their own potential. With the support of staff programmers, mentors work closely with small groups of kids to complete super fun literacy projects, giving each child receives the attention and enthusiastic high-fives that they deserve. Read more about The Writers’ Exchange.

What you'll do

In-School or After-School Literacy Mentor

  • Help students in grades 1 to 7 with fun creative writing, crafts and art projects (some of which may eventually published in our professional chapbooks!)
  • Occasionally work with students to complete homework from all subjects
  • Support the social, emotional and behavioural development of at-risk kids
  • Give out hundreds of high fives!

  • Awesome experience for a future career working with at-risk kids (maybe as a teacher, educational support worker, social worker, child psychologist, etc.).


  • For this placement, you must also fill out an application form for the Writers’ Exchange – in the paragraph section, please indicate that you are applying through the Trek Program.
  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check
  • Must provide two references
  • Must attend a 3-hour orientation in September, and 1.5 hour training session in October.
  • Must be fully committed to attending all weekly shifts for at least one full term


  • Previous experience working with kids is great, and/or 1 – 2 years of post-secondary education in child/youth work, education, and/or child psychology, but is not required.
  • Able to commit to attend one in-school program per term (1.5 hours / week for 4 - 5 weeks) and/or the same weekly two-hour shift in an after-school program for at least one full term (10 - 15 weeks). Our terms run from September - December, January - March, April - June, and July - August. We encourage Literacy Mentors to make an even longer-term commitment to cultivate close, supportive relationships with kids as they grow up.
  • Possess most or all 15 of the following qualities: adaptable, committed, compassionate, consistent, flexible, friendly, fun, genuine, kind, love to learn, open-minded, relaxed, team player, trustworthy, and understanding
  • You thrive in a space that is loud, fun, energetic, and constantly changing
  • Previous experience working with children is great but is not required – a genuine enthusiasm to connect with awesome kids over glue and glitter is more important
  • Eager to participate in ongoing training activities
