About the program

Kochi University of Technology (KUT) in Kami City on the Shikoku Island of Japan, is providing select UBC students the opportunity to take part in a 10-day cultural immersion program at their beautiful campus in Kami, Japan. Participants will attend Japanese language and cultural classes, lectures by KUT professors, and interact with local students and residents. Furthermore, the program includes a two-day excursion to Kochi as well the opportunity to attend the Yosakoi Dance Festival, which celebrates a unique, highly energetic style of dance that combines traditional Japanese dance movements with modern music.

Please note that academic transfer credit is not available for this program.

UBC can send up to 2 students to this program. Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis. All students must satisfy the following criteria:

  • At least a 70% average in your most recent academic term of full-time studies prior to your application
  • Full-time student status as defined by your faculty
  • Be in first or second year of undergraduate studies
  • Have never previously visited Japan
  • Currently in technology, science, or math-related studies

Program Fees

Yosakoi Summer School is a fully-funded opportunity. KUT covers roundtrip airfare (up to 150,000 yen or approximately $1698 CAD), accommodation fees and some meals. Participants will be responsible for their own travel insurance, as well as small expenses roughly totaling 15,000 yen (approx. $170 CAD).

Please note that because this is a fully-funded opportunity, students selected for this program would not be eligible for the Go Global Award.
