About

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award offers senior undergraduate and graduate students at UBC the opportunity to receive funding up to $6000.00 to participate in 12- to 24-week research projects at accredited universities in Mitacs partner countries.

Please review the Mitacs Globalink Initiatives website for students at Canadian universities for more information on current initiatives.

Application Process

Graduate students, senior undergraduate students and faculty members in any faculty may initiate an application.

Mitacs will be accepting Globalink Research Award applications at any time throughout the year. Candidates do not need to wait until Mitacs issues a call for proposals to submit a GRA application. The September call for applications will support travel beginning the following spring, and the January call for applications will support travel beginning in the fall of the same year.

  1. Graduate or senior undergraduate students will identify a research area, a UBC faculty member to supervise the project, and a research supervisor at a host university in one of the Mitacs partner countries listed above.
  2. With the faculty supervisors, the student will develop a project proposal and complete the Proposal Application.
  3. Once the Proposal Application is complete, the UBC faculty member or student will forward it to the Office of Research Services (ORS) to request the approval signature.
  4. Following review and approval by ORS, an email will be sent to the student and supervising UBC faculty member informing them that the application is ready to pick up.  The student and faculty member then submit the proposal, and application documents to Mitacs by email.
  5. The student and faculty member then submit the proposal and application documents to Mitacs by email.
  6. If accepted, the student and UBC faculty member receives a letter of conditional acceptance and completes the rest of the application process with the student as outlined on the Mitacs website.
  7. In consultation with Go Global, the student completes the following pre-departure requirements:
    1. Participating in a pre-departure preparation and safety briefing meeting with a Go Global advisor.
    2. Completing the travel authorization process, if necessary. See the “Travel Restrictions” section below.
    3. Completing UBC’s Student Safety Abroad Registry.
    4. Having a Go Global advisor sign the Mitacs International Pre-Departure form.
  8. The completed forms and application are submitted to Mitacs.
  9. Funds are released only after the application receives final approval from Mitacs. Travel is not permitted before final approval.

Roles and Responsibilities

Please read the section on “Eligibility, Roles and Responsibilities” on the Mitacs website which details the expectations of the student, UBC supervising professor and the host university supervisor.

Travel restrictions

Note that some regions within the Mitacs partner countries are subject to official travel advisories placed by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.  See the UBC Student Safety Abroad Website to learn more about how to determine the level of advisory for the location to which you are proposing to travel, and the authorization process for students wishing to travel to regions subject to official travel warnings. If you have questions about UBC’s Student Safety Abroad Policy, or about your destination, contact the UBC Safety Abroad Advisor at safety.abroad@ubc.ca.

Funding

The award funds (up to $5000.00) are provided to the supervising professor at UBC from the Office of Research Services. The supervising UBC professor assumes fiduciary responsibility for the award. The funds are to be used for direct costs related to traveling to the research location and accommodations. See the Funding and budget guidelines in the Proposal Application on the Mitacs Program Guide website.
