Applying to Research Abroad happens in two steps

As soon as you submit your application to Go Global, you will be contacted by the advisor with instructions for next steps. You can apply to Go Global well in advance of the deadline to get a headstart on the rest of your application.

1. Apply to Go Global once you’ve identified programs you're interested in

  • Submit your Go Global application online. You can apply for up to 3 programs on one application.
  • Go Global will contact you within 2 weeks of submission with instructions on how to apply to the partner and an electronic copy of your UBC transcript.

2. Apply directly to the partner university

  • Each research program will have detailed instructions on how to apply and strict submission deadlines.
  • All research programs will require supporting documents that typically include:
    • Academic references (1 – 3)
    • Letter of intent
    • Curriculum vitae
    • UBC transcript

About the program

Program dates: ​6 weeks with two sessions:

Early-July – early-August

Late-July – mid-August

National Taiwan University is one of the world’s leading research institutions and is considered the best university in Taiwan. National Taiwan University’s summer programs provide UBC students a unique opportunity to increase your international network while gaining laboratory research experience.

The Laboratory Research & Culture Program  allows students to participate in research in one of NTU’s state-of-the-art labs while enhancing their knowledge of Taiwan through a cultural course consisting of field-trips and lectures. The program involves lab research, lectures, and field trips ensuring students have the opportunity to explore environmental and sociocultural aspects of Taiwan.

Program-specific eligibility

  •  Students should be in good standing in their 3rd or 4th year.
  • Meet the Go Global eligibility requirements
  • Meet any additional lab project requirements as outlined on the program website

General Research Abroad eligibility

  • You must have at least a 70% average in your most recent academic term of full-time studies prior to application
  • We are looking at your Term 1 (Fall term) grades for summer research abroad experiences
  • You should have full-time student status as defined by your faculty in the year prior to your research abroad experience
  • You need to be a UBC student in good standing (e.g. not be under academic or non-academic discipline)
  • You must maintain 70% average prior to your exchange departure

Housing

Students are encouraged to apply for on-campus dormitory onthe partner application. Room preferences include single or double. Requests will be carefully considered; however, due to limited rooms, +R1 students are not guaranteed with dormitory. Alternatively, off-campus housing information will be provided.

Program costs and fees

Students are responsible for the all program fees and cost of travel and living associated with participating in this program. For more information on program and living costs while at National Taiwan University, please check out this page.

Students accepted into this program will be charged the Go Global fee once acceptance has been confirmed.

Awards and funding for Research Abroad

Value: Up to $2000 per term

Eligibility: All students accepted into a research abroad program, through Go Global, will be considered for this award. A separate application is not required. If you meet the eligibility criteria, then you will be notified of your award after acceptance into the program.

  • To be eligible for the award, you must have an average of at least 70% on your best 24 credits in the Winter Session of the previous year (with no failed or incomplete courses).
  • If you were on a co-op work term, you must have at least 70% on your best 12 credits in the other term. 

This award is automatically considered, and you don't need to apply.

Go Global fee and withdrawal policy

If you are accepted by a host university for a structured research program, you will be asked to confirm you participation in the program and you will be charged the Go Global fee of $415. The fee will be posted to your SSC account following confirmation of your acceptance. Go Global will contact you with complete information on how to pay the fee.

You will not be able to make payment in-person at Brock Hall (Vancouver), University Centre (Okanagan), the Go Global office or your financial institution. You cannot pay this fee directly through your financial institution’s online banking interface as payments made through this method will only be counted towards your tuition and your Go Global fee will remain unpaid.

Students who withdraw from a research abroad program due to extenuating circumstances or within 15 days of the fee being posted are eligble for a fee adjustment from $415 to $93.25.  

Pre-Departure policy

UBC is committed to preparing students for safe and successful international experiences.  In order to achieve this, any student participating in a Go Global Program must complete the following:

  • All UBC Student Safety Abroad requirements
  • Go Global Program-specific pre-departure requirements (includes both online and in-person components)

Failure to successfully complete these and any other requirements may result in withdrawal from the Go Global Program.
