About the program

Program dates: 8 weeks with two sessions beginning in early June and late June.

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program in Kashiwa (UTSIP) is a summer internship program for students majoring in natural science and other relevant fields in conjunction with the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS). The program offers a unique experience for cultural activity, including Japanese lessons, field trips and social and cultural events to best integrate you into Japanese culture. Lectures on cross-disciplinary scientific areas are also part of the program. At the conclusion of the program, you are required to make an oral presentation and submit a report on the research project. Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a certificate from the school.

Eligibility and prerequisites

  • Meet the Go Global eligibility requirements

  • Be a 3rd or 4th year student in Science or a relevant discipline

  • The program is competitive and Go Global recommends students with an average of 75% or higher apply
  • Meet any additional lab project requirements as outlined on the program website

Awards and funding

All students are considered for the Go Global Research Abroad Award 

UTokyo provides a UTSIP scholarship and accommodation to participants.

UTSIP scholarship amount:    JPY 110,000


Off-campus housing is provided for students participating in this program. 

Program costs and fees

Students accepted into this program will be charged the Go Global fee once acceptance has been confirmed.

How to apply

  1. Review the project list or available labs on the partner website to ensure there is a project or lab you are interested in
  2. Apply to register your interest with Go Global online
  3. Go Global reviews all applications on a rolling basis and contacts students with partner application instructions within 2 weeks of submission.
  4.  Each partner application may request different supporting documents. For University of Tokyo, prepare to have the following documents ready to include with your partner application:
    • Official transcript (provided by Go Global)
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Cover Letter
    • One recommendation letter
    • Certificate of Registration (Letter of Enrolment avaialable on your SSC account)
    • Copy of your passport
    • Your Digital Photo (Upper body, plain single-color background, taken within the last three months)
  5. Once you’ve collected all documents submit your partner application online by the application deadline.
