A. F. BARSS Prize in Horticulture

A $450 prize is available through an endowment established in honour of Dr. Alden F. Barss, Professor of Horticulture from 1918-1953, by Dean Emeritus Blythe Eagles, Mrs. Eagles and the Barss' family. This award is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the appointment of Leonard S. Klinck as Dean of Agriculture, May 11, 1974. Dr. Barss was a teacher devoted to helping others and committed to horticultural in the province. He gave direction and understanding to student veterans from two world wars, supervised all campus development and maintenance for 30 years and was Honorary secretary of BC Fruit Growers Association for 8 years. His submission, "A Proposal to Improve the Relations of the University to the Province by the Establishment of a University Extension Service" created the Department of Extension in 1933. Candidate is a fourth year student in Plant Science with interests in Horticulture with the highest aggregate standing in third and fourth year subjects, including graduating thesis. This prize is one of a series of awards, designated as the Agricultural Sciences Founding Faculty Prizes, established to honour those responsible for the organization and development of Agricultural Sciences at UBC.
