About the Scholars Community

Students who receive major awards have unique interests and responsibilities, and face particular challenges. That’s why UBC has created the Scholars Community – to ensure top scholars like you receive the support and inspiration you need to achieve your best!

The Scholars Community provides major award winners with opportunities that enhance your academic and professional development, help build your skills and experiences, and support your wellbeing.

An exciting new initiative for domestic students, the Scholars Community was launched in September 2016.

You are eligible to join the Scholars Community if you receive a major renewable award from a number of categories, including:

  • Major Entrance Scholarships (MES)
  • Centennial Scholars Entrance Award (CSEA)
  • Schulich Leader Scholarships
  • Loran Scholars

A similar program is available for international students who hold major awards. Visit the UBC International Scholars Program page for more info.

How to join

If you meet the eligibility requirements, we will contact you via email in August, with an invitation to join the Scholars Community. Please make sure your email address in the Student Service Centre (SSC) is up-to-date.

Benefits of being a Community Member

Here are some examples:

Scholars Community Mentorship Program

Be matched with and mentored by an upper-year scholar who can orient you to the campus, UBC culture, and helpful resources. A friendly face from day one, your mentor is there to help you make the most of your UBC experience!

Scholars Advisory Council

Enhance your leadership skills, gain experience in providing feedback, and learn about student development by joining the Scholars Advisory Council. The Council meets on a monthly basis to provide vital feedback on Scholars Community programming.

Scholars Community Event Series

Being a scholar is more than just getting good grades. Attend unique lectures and info sessions that will help you stand out in interviews, prepare for prestigious awards and scholarships, and balance academic responsibilities and personal passions.

Learn what graduate programs look for in candidates and what it’s like to work in a particular profession, such as medicine.

Hear firsthand from subject matter experts, faculty members, and UBC alumni as they share their knowledge, insights, and experience.

Connect with scholars at games nights, networking socials, and study lounges. Come meet new and like-minded friends!

Maintaining your membership

To maintain membership in the Scholars Community from year to year, scholars are required to:

  • Attend one Community event between September and April of each academic year
  • Complete a year-end survey about their experience in the Scholars Community, and indicate they'd like to opt in to the Community for the following year

We understand that scholars are sometimes not able to renew their award funding. If this happens, you will still be able to remain in the Scholars Community and enjoy the full benefits of membership, as long as you meet the above requirements each year.
