Our Design Challenge Partner for SLC 2020 - Covenant House Vancouver
Covenant House provides love and hope to Vancouver's homeless and at-risk street youth. They help young people aged 16 to 24 who have fled physical, emotional and sexual abuse; those who have been forced from their homes; and those who have aged out of foster care.
The kids that come to them for help feel abandoned, rejected and alone. They've often faced terrible situations in their past. They are victims of physical and sexual abuse, they've suffered human trafficking, or they have witnessed drug and alcohol misuse by their family members. As a result, the physical and emotional trauma has affected them and caused them to flee their homes, seeking refuge on the streets.
Covenant House fights against the crisis of homelessness; to give these youth a fresh start and a source of unconditional love and absolute respect. Covenant House Vancouver is more than just a shelter or transitional housing - it ensures young people always have a place to call home and a family that genuinely cares for them.
What is the Design Challenge?
The SLC Design Challenge is a unique experiential learning opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary team, under time pressures, to produce an informed response to a challenge proposed by specific individuals or organizations of reputation.
For delegates who have been to the SLC once or more, this will be a different way of engaging leaders to think in a critical way about a gap that already exists on the UBC campus. The Design Challenge is an opportunity to reflect on your experiences as a student leader, and to use and hone transferable skills you already have.
The Design Challenges are designed to help you to go beyond your lines in your journey and think out of the box to come up with a creative solution.
How does it work?
You will be placed in a group of delegates, based on your preferences as indicated when you register for the SLC. The entirety of the challenge will take place in an interactive creative space that will allow you to access relevant resources and the execution of the design process. You will have access to campus partners and additional resources on the day-of, as well, you will have the chance to present your final solution to an Adjudication Panel, and participate in a guided reflection and a debrief of your experience.
The Design Challenge itself will run during the entirety of the conference day, beginning after the Opening Ceremonies, and ending prior to the Closing Ceremonies.
