Learn the tools to make social change
When you think of learning at UBC, you probably think of the classes you take, the notes you study, and the lectures you attend.
These are major aspects of your studies - but once you get a good handle on them, there are so many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom!
The Changemaker Series is for anybody who's interested in making a change, big or small - it’s a starting point for students who know they want to make a difference.
This year’s theme, Take it Outside, will offer events focused on gearing up, navigating, and exploring the realm of changemaking. You’ll hear community and student perspectives and learn about campus resources.
You'll get strategies for tackling issues that are important to you from active changemakers who are focusing on:
- Affordable housing (September 26)
- Refugees and displaced persons (October 11),
- Environmental issues (November 9)
Miya Zhang, a 4th year Science student, had this to say about her experience:
“Changemaker helped me realize that I don’t need to be a superhero to make an impact. I started to recognize how I was already creating change through my involvements on campus; I learned to take notice of how my daily actions like sorting waste can make a difference. By reflecting on how I could translate an abstract social problem into a tangible action, I began to get an idea of what I could do to give back to the community.”
The Changemaker Series is put on by the Centre for Community Engaged Learning (CCEL). CCEL provides students with opportunities to apply their academic knowledge to real-world issues in a whole range of different ways.
Beyond Changemaker, CCEL runs workshops and grant programs to support students looking to make an impact. If you want to get involved in other ways, you can take classes that incorporate community-based learning, or you can participate in the Reading Week or Trek programs (applications currently open for Trek!), which include placements in community organizations.
Whether you want to invest a lot of time or only have a little, these are all opportunities to expand the scope of what you learn during your time at UBC.
