Movement for your mind (and body)

It seems that my entire life right now is school, and I’m guessing that you’re feeling the same way.

Last week, I decided to make a small change in my routine. I made a choice to use my lunch break to do something that I don’t often prioritizeexercise.

Last week UBC REC hosted a free Zumba class as a simple reminder that movement matters for more than just your bodyit's also vital for your mind. We’re so often bogged down with stress that it seems we can’t possibly take time out to move, let alone exercise. But research shows that doing a physical activity can boost brain power, alleviate stress, and sharpen memory. But don’t just take my word for it, there is a ton of information on this stuff.

Seeing a room full of people breaking it down to Beyonce was a fantastic reminder that exercise doesn’t have to be a strict routine of lifting weights in The Birdcoop. Instead, it can be just an hour of fun. Not a single person in that gymnasium had a frown on their face, and no one was taking themselves too seriously.

Let me tell you, nothing alleviates midterm stress like grooving to Yeah! by Usher with 100 other students.

Part of the fun for me was being able to experience the class with 2 great friends. With limited time, why not check off 2 boxes by spending time with friends while moving your body?

It doesn’t even have to be Zumba. It can be a walk in Pacific Spirit Park, a soccer match, a slackline competition, or a bike ride. And remember, no matter what your ability, there are lots of different ways to Get Moving at UBC, and almost everyone can benefit from incorporating movement into their lives.

Take 1 hour and experience the benefits of movementfor your body and your mind!
