UBC Recreation Free Week

Looking to sweat off all that first-week junk food? Want to start a new fitness routine for fall? Free Week is your chance to try out UBC Recreation’s fitness classes.

From September 11th to 17th, join in on a huge variety of instructor-led classes. You don’t need to register nor have any experience! Try street kickboxing, yoga, lyrical jazz, martial arts, spin class, boot camps...and more!

Ways to get your sweat on at Free Week

Dance

Learn some moves for your next party! Choose from contemporary, hip hop, dancehall, burlesque, belly dance, latin funk, and jazz. There’s a dance style for everyone

If you don’t know what to choose, check out the beginner’s Hip Hop I class. It combines hip hop and funk moves for an energetic and fun way to work up a sweat – in style.

Try martial arts

Did you know Krav Maga is a self-defense and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces? You too can learn some swift and efficient self-defence moves from a multi-black belt instructor. Drop by the dojo at the Student Recreation Centre to try Krav Maga or many other martial arts! Not sure what to expect? Check out how Krav Maga was like for this student

Get ready to feel safer on campus, more confident…and probably a little sore.

Play a sport

If you like to be part of a team or feel the rush of competition, drop-in sports could be perfect for you! Sports range from badminton to basketball, futsal (indoor soccer), volleyball, and table tennis. Plus, these drop-ins are free for students all year, so you can come back often.

Stretch with yoga and pilates

If you’ve been meaning to take up yoga, now’s the perfect time! UBC Recreation offers a ton of yoga and pilates classes to calm your mind and body – something we could all use during the hustle and bustle of September. These workouts are a great way to take care of your health and wellness while building strength!

Fit in fitness

Staying fit just got easier thanks to UBC Recreation’s flexible hours and great variety of fitness options. From cardio boot camps to indoor wall climbing, street kickboxing, and spin classes, there’s something for everyone. You can also get a gym membership to the BirdCoop Fitness Centre for $30 per term – exclusive to UBC students.

Bonus: The more you get your fitness on, the easier it’ll be for you to feel focused, energized, confident, and justify that 3rd slice of pizza.

Swim

Did you know the new UBC Aquatic Centre collects and recycles rainwater to supply most of the water in the building? This sustainable and state-of-the-art facility is yours to use for free. Try the drop-in swim and fitness classes, like Get Wet & Sweat at 10 am on September 15th.

Other free ways to stay active

Two students learn tennis technique

If these classes aren’t quite what you’re looking for, check out the Aquatics Centre Open House or the Tennis Centre Open House to learn more about the facilities and try some fun activities. There will be free snacks, lunch, and prizes!

Throughout the year, you can also take advantage of free drop-in skating, swimming, and sports and intramurals.
