Upcoming Arts & Culture Events: Oct 2017

UBC features a wide breadth of events every year that bring high-quality cultural experiences to students. Take a break from studying, flex your cultural muscle and attend some of these events.

Night Shift Cabaret: Body Language

dancers performing

The second installment of Night Shift at The Museum of Anthropology includes a dance performance and the chance to explore the museum after hours. Don’t fret if you missed the first Night Shift event in the series - it’s still free for students, and is a fun way to spend a Thursday night. It’s a totally different experience to visit the museum after hours and is a good option as a post-dinner activity with a group of friends. This month’s feature performance by Taiwan’s Assembly Dance Theatre will show you how movement can teach us to speak a new language, and how to write with our bodies.

Don’t forget that MOA is always free for students, has a great new cafe and is worth a walk-through during the day as well!

Why you should go: Each Night Shift features a DJ and a 19+ bar (although the event itself is not 19+)

When: Thurs, Oct. 5th & every first Thursday of the month

Price: Free

Arts Food Truck Festival

students enjoying food truck festival

Enjoy mid-day festivities and great food! This delicious event is part of the United Way Week of Caring, and takes place right outside the Robert H Lee Alumni Centre. Enjoy food from a variety of food trucks as well as Loafe Cafe, and know that a dollar from every purchase will go to United Way. While food is the focus (obvs), there will also be some surprise performances by UBC students. Keep your eyes peeled for the revamped Arts and Culture District Ticket Trike and maybe even a cupcake giveaway happening around 12:30 PM… you didn’t hear it from me! More details on their facebook page.

Why you should go: $1 from each food purchase goes to support United Way

When: Thurs, Oct. 12th, 11 am - 2 pm

Price: Free (plus cost of food)

UBC Studio Sessions

Experience the cool performance clubs at UBC in one night! The UBC Musical Theatre Troupe, UBC Acappella, The Illusionists… these are just a few of the performers you can take-in at this event. It’s basically a buffet table of all the performance clubs on campus that you can join. Make sure to bring your I.D. and buy drinks at the bar to bring into the studio with you. Stay after the show and meet the performers! It’s at a great venue (the Telus Studio in the Chan Centre) so you can feel fancy and enjoy a fun show since there's something for every palate. Read more here.

Why you should go: If you hesitated about joining a club this year, this is your chance to reevaluate and see the incredible talent that exists at UBC

When: Thurs, Oct 19, 6 pm Club Booths, 7 pm showtime, 9 pm party

The Diviners Exhibit

Art piece from the Diviners exhibit

This new art exhibit features work by UBC Fine Arts students, faculty, and other professionals. The Art History and Visual Art (AHVA) Gallery is inside the Audain Art Centre and is known to showcase stellar work. Bring your new friend from class on a quick tour, or take a creativity break and stop in on your way to the bus. The gallery is a single room, so you’re not making any commitment to exploring a large exhibit. Art should make you think, and be accessible to everyone, and the AHVA gallery delivers on both fronts.

Why you should go: The intimate AHVA Gallery is open from 12 to 4 pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and can easily be visited between classes

When: Sept 27 - Nov 4

Price: Free

In case you didn’t know… The Chan Centre releases a limited number of $15 student tickets a week before for their signature Chan Centre Presents series. Chan Centre tickets usually start at around $40, so you’ll be getting a huge discount to see some world-class performances.
