What I learned as a Coordinator for the SLC

In 2015, I was entering UBC as a first-year student, bright-eyed and ready to take on all that the university had to offer.

All throughout high school, I felt this urge to step up, take the lead, and make an impact in the community, but I constantly questioned my abilities.

I allowed my insecurities to get in the way of experiencing leadership opportunities I was always curious about.

But with a plethora of clubs and organizations thrown my way during Imagine UBC, I was excited to start my undergrad journey. I soon realized there was just one problem - I had no idea where to begin.

I wanted to try something new and become a student leader, but not pretend to be someone I’m not - and that's where the UBC Student Leadership Conference (SLC) came into play.

When I heard about a conference fully organized by students, I thought it was pretty admirable. When I discovered that I could also get involved with this organization as a volunteer and that it required a small time commitment, I thought: incredible - sign me up!

At first, I thought I’d get a cool t-shirt and free lunch, meet new people from different years and faculties, and hear an inspirational speech or two. And while I did get to experience all of these things, I walked away with so much more than I’d anticipated.

Not only was I introduced to numerous involvement opportunities on- and off-campus, but I also met inspirational student leaders who encouraged me to strive to be the person I hope to see in others.

The SLC gave me the confidence to apply for positions that high school-me wouldn’t have even considered.

The following year I applied to be a part of the SLC Planning Committee and landed the role of Associate Plenary Coordinator, which gave me insight into the work that goes into planning a conference.

This year, as a Volunteer Coordinator, I’ve gained an even greater appreciation for this exceptional event that wouldn't be possible without the effort of every team member. From directors to volunteers, every single contributor matters.

Participants and volunteers at the SLC

Being part of the SLC has made me realize that student leadership doesn’t always look like a club president or an individual bedazzled with numerous academic achievements. Oftentimes, it’s the person who offers to show you the way to your new class or someone who notices and takes the time to ask if you’re okay when you’re struggling.

Leadership doesn’t have to be paired with a grand gesture, but it does start with you.

By taking that one step outside my comfort zone and applying to volunteer for the SLC, I created the momentum I needed to find my place at UBC. The more I met new people and expanded my network, the smaller campus felt.

It’s seeing a familiar face in class from another club, or bumping into a stranger-turned-friend because of a shared campus involvement that makes attending such a huge university feel like a place where you belong. And it all starts with that small urge to get involved.

I strongly encourage anyone who’s interested in learning more about the SLC to visit slc.ubc.ca. Who knows - you might end up with a wonderful community of like-minded students, new ideas, connections for your future leadership endeavours, and, of course, a really cool t-shirt.

The SLC Coordinator applications for the 2019 SLC Planning Committee are due Friday, February 23rd.
