Making friends in residence

The UBC Life Residence Guide

Residence is the best place to make friends. Everyone is in the same boat: new to UBC and looking for people to hang out, study, eat, and explore with.

Find your own tight-knit community with these 5 residence tips:

Go to floor meetings and events

House, branch (multi-floor), and floor meetings are where you see everyone from your building. They’re also where you find out about everything that’s going on in residence, as well as events on campus specifically for first years.

Be sure to check out a few AMS Firstweek events—it’s a great way to make friends outside of your house. In the past, there’s been movie nights, wine and painting, and pool parties. Get a crew together from your floor and head out together!

Open doors

Propping your door open is an easy way to meet people from the comfort of your own room. It’s a literal open invitation for your floormates to drop by—they’ll probably peek into your room for a chat! And when you walk down the hall, take your floormates’ open doors as a signal to say "hi" back.

Send positive signals

The key to making friends is to be approachable. I know it’s tempting to put in earphones or scroll through Instagram when you’re alone in public, but that body language says, “I’m busy, don’t talk to me.”

If you want to socialize, sit at a communal table in the floor lounge or dining room. Smile, make eye contact, and introduce yourself when someone sits down. And invite others to join you—you never know, it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Take it online

Every year, new Facebook groups pop up for your graduating class, residence area, and even your specific floor. Whether you chat online or meet up in real life, there are a ton of opportunities to meet people through these channels.

Remember, we’re all in this together!

The beauty of university is that you can be friends with anyone, of any age, in any year. We’re all here to learn, grow, and meet new people!

Be open, say "yes" to new experiences, and you’ll have your iconic squad in no time.
