The professor is in

As a first-year student, lots of people will tell you to “go to your prof’s office hours.”

But what if you’re not really sure what to go to office hours for? Or what if you’re a bit intimidated by your prof? These concerns are all normal. The Profs-in-Spaces programs make interacting with professors easier, more accessible, and fun! Dedicated professors from different disciplines help bridge the gap between students and professors by coming to you.

Here’s some of what Profs-in-Spaces do:

Profs-in-Commons

Professors and their TAs hold “open office hours” at the Chapman Learning Commons on the third floor of IKBLC.

Any student, regardless of their discipline, can come and talk with a professor in a relaxed and student-centred space. Events in this space include:

  • Dr. Neil Armitage from Sociology hosting knitting lessons during exams
  • Free coffee booths
  • #ProfWalks, where students and professors invite each other on a nice, relaxed campus walk

This year there will be 3 more professors joining the fun in the Chapman Learning Commons.

Profs-in-Collegia

If you live off campus and want to stay connected, we’ve got you covered with our Profs-in-Collegia!

Whether you belong to Oak, Arbutus, or Tallwood, one of the in-house profs - Karen Smith, Celeste Leander, and Kevin Fisher - will be ready to talk study tips over tea, take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of their workspaces including labs and the Museum of Anthropology, or even just talk about life while you bake cookies together.

The collegia is a home away from home for first-year students commuting to campus. The Profs-in-Collegia plan events that will make you feel at home, offer advice to help you achieve academic success, and make you feel more comfortable on campus.

Profs-in-Residence

Profs-in-Rez is one of our largest Profs-in-Spaces programs, hosted in residences from Orchard Commons to Totem Residence and Place Vanier.

Professors Celina Berg, Michael Griffin, and Jay Wickenden can be found hanging out with students in lounges, common areas, and dining halls.

Whether it’s having dinner with your entire floor, reviewing popular movies with pizza in hand, or decorating cookies while discussing study tips, the Profs-in-Rez are there to connect with you in your home on campus.

One the most popular events is Prof-Talks, where different faculty from across campus have critical discussions with students in an informal and casual setting.
