The scratch of skates on ice, the warm smell of popcorn, the roar of a sea of fans in blue and gold...The Winter Classic is almost here, and the Thunderbirds need YOU to cheer them on.
It’s the 5th annual Winter Classic, UBC’s biggest night of men’s hockey, usually attended by over 5000 excited fans. This year, the UBC Thunderbirds face off against the University of Calgary Dinos in what is sure to be a truly epic match.
The biscuit (the puck) drops at 7:00 pm on January 18, but come early as the fun starts when the gates open at 5:00 pm with a pre-game festival on the arena concourse—and continues throughout gameplay. So, grow out your flow because you don’t want to miss this one!
Did that fire you up? If so, great! Go to the Winter Classic! But if not, I can sympathize.
Despite my immaculate use of hockey slang, I’m no Wayne Gretzky. In fact, I haven’t attended many sports games at UBC at all…ok, I’ve been to exactly 2, and I only stayed until halftime for both of them. Oops.
It’s really easy to get stuck in the bubble of your comfort zone at university. I don’t follow sports very closely, and they don’t tend to cross my radar at UBC. I haven’t really made an effort to get involved with that part of the campus community.
My goal this term is to change that because there are so many cool, diverse things happening on campus and I want to experience as many of them as I can. If you’re like me and can’t remember the last time you stepped foot inside an arena that wasn’t for a concert, then the Winter Classic might be a great way to get outside your comfort zone.
The match promises to be one of the most high energy nights at UBC and will be a great way to feel like you’re part of the campus community.
It can be tough to feel a lot of school spirit somewhere as sprawling as UBC, but going to a big sports game like the Winter Classic is a surefire way to feel warm and fuzzy for the ol’ University of Building Construction.
Not only will there be hockey, but you can enjoy live music and DJs, games, and more before the match starts. Also, make sure you get your blue and gold on at the face painting station because the Thunderbirds will need all your support!
There’s nothing like cheering wildly with a bunch of fellow students to bond, so grab some buddies and head out, or even go on your own and make some new friends! If you need any more encouragement to go, check out some awesome pictures from last year’s match.
