Take a break(away) at the 2020 Winter Classic

The scratch of skates on ice, the warm smell of popcorn, the roar of a sea of fans in blue and gold... The Winter Classic is almost here, and the Thunderbirds need YOU to cheer them on.

It’s the 6th annual Winter Classic, UBC’s biggest night of men’s hockey, usually attended by over 5,000 excited fans. This year, the UBC Thunderbirds face off against the University of Manitoba Bisons in what is sure to be a truly epic match. The biscuit (puck) drops at 7:00 pm on January 17grow out your flow because you don’t want to miss this one!

Whether you’re new to hockey or a diehard fan of the sport, going to this game is a great way to celebrate with thousands of your peers in one place, something that doesn’t happen too often at UBC. It’s a lot more fun to get together for a hockey game than an exam!

The match promises to be one of the most high-energy nights of the year, and will be a great way to connect with our campus community.

It can be tough to feel a lot of school spirit somewhere as sprawling as UBC, but going to a big sports game like the Winter Classic is a surefire way to feel proud of all the cool things happening here—including some amazing hockey.

Ice hockey is actually Canada’s official national winter sport, but you don’t have to be Sidney Crosby to enjoy it. My favourite part of going to a game is having a fun opportunity to hang out with my friends, or simply relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. There aren’t many nights over the school year like it!

Not only will there be hockey at the Winter Classic, but you can enjoy live DJs, games, and more before the match starts. Make sure you get your blue and gold on at the face painting station, because the Thunderbirds will need all your support.

Nothing beats cheering wildly with a bunch of fellow students to bond, so grab some buddies and head out, or even go on your own and make some new friends!
