Funding your Bachelor of Education

Overview

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) is an intensive program with significant costs. Understanding your costs is essential to building a good financial plan and a successful year of study.

Understanding your costs

Start by using the cost calculator to estimate your costs for the year, including tuition, fees, and living expenses. Next, consider the resources available to you. You are expected to prepare for the costs of the Bachelor of Education program by accessing all resources available, including but not limited to:

  • Parent and family support

  • Summer earnings

  • Personal savings

  • Government student loans

  • Bursaries

  • Part-time work

Bursaries

You are encouraged to apply for the UBC Bursary Program as another type of financial support.

To be eligible for the UBC Bursary Program, please make sure you have applied for your government student loan by July 31 and apply for the bursary through your Student Service Centre (SSC) between August 15 and September 15.

  • The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program is eligible for a limited number of bursaries and therefore your full unmet need may not be filled.
  • By applying for the Winter Bursary Program between August 15 and September 15, you will be considered for the full length of the 11-month program. You will not be eligible for more assistance in the Summer Bursary program, as your unmet need will have already been considered for the full year.

Student loans

Government student loans are available to help supplement your financial resources. It is important to note that these loans will not cover all your costs for the Bachelor of Education (BEd) program. Read more about types of loans and eligibility.

  • Your student loan will be disbursed in 2 unequal installments.
  • Check your loan assessment for exact amounts and disbursement dates.
  • By applying for your loan by July 31, your tuition will be deferred to after your loan disbursement dates of early September and mid-February.
  • Please ensure you have met the minimum credit load requirements to maintain your loan. Because this is an intensive program, the minimum credit loads are different between terms and are higher than the standard 9-credit minimums. Refer to the email you receive in early July titled “Important student loans and bursary information for Education Students”.

Student line of credit

A student line of credit may be an option for you to make sure you have enough money to cover your costs.

You can apply for a student line of credit at any private bank. Bring your letter of acceptance or a proof of enrolment letter to the bank when you apply.

To download your proof of enrolment, please log into your Student Service Centre (SSC) and select “Proof of Enrolment Letter” under Grades and Records. Be sure to select the correct Academic Session for your letter.

Work opportunities

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program involves an intense course load and finding time to work may be difficult.

A Work Learn position may be your best option if you choose to work during your studies. It's a great way to earn extra money part-time during the academic year. There are also other part-time jobs on campus.
