Empower Me is a mental health service offering counselling in person, by telephone, by video-counselling, or by e-counselling. You can also speak to a life coach about subjects like personal performance, wellbeing, and relationships. Empower Me is available 24/7 and is available free of charge for students who are members of the AMS/GSS Student Health Plan.
Crisis support through Empower Me is available to all students (regardless of your health care plan).

Designed to help you check how you’ve feeling and quickly connect you to mental health resources and support. Support includes education, self-care tools, website links, and assistance in connecting to local professional resources.
A great app and website that includes tools to help you tackle concerns such as test anxiety, worry, social anxiety, and panic.
Offers self-help modules for many types of concerns such as procrastination, self-esteem, anxiety, low mood, body image, assertiveness, self-compassion, perfectionism, worry, and social anxiety.
Wellness advising appointments
In wellness advising appointments, wellness advisors meet with you for about 15 to 20 minutes to connect you to the level of support that best meets your needs.
Prior to your appointment, we’ll ask you to complete a 15-minute assessment, which helps prepare both you and the wellness advisor to clarify your concerns and create a wellness plan.
Creating a wellness plan together
Your wellness plan outlines resources to help you address your concerns. A number of factors can determine what level of support is the best fit for you, including the nature of your concerns, your goals, and your time, energy, and readiness for change. A wellness advisor will work with you to customize your wellness plan from a broad spectrum of mental health resources:
Each level of support varies in intensity and the time, energy, and commitment required to engage in it. The level of intensity, however, does not equate to effectiveness. Low intensity levels of support have been found to be as effective as higher levels for many students' concerns. The resources in each level of support below have been carefully screened and selected by wellness professionals to help you address your mental health concerns to the best of your ability.
When you take steps to help yourself, you empower yourself with confidence and skills to achieve what's important to you. Visit a mental health professional at Counselling Services to get connected to online programs and tools to help you reach your wellness goals.
Wellness peers are trained student volunteers at the UBC Wellness Centre. They're passionate about answering your health questions and helping you achieve balance. As students, they often understand what you're going through and can help connect you with the tips and information you're looking for. You can talk to a wellness peer at the Wellness Centre (no appointment necessary), or attend any of several wellness workshops.
Attending group programs can help you feel supported and put problems into perspective. All programs are evidence-based to help you develop effective strategies for managing your concerns in a supportive environment.
Referral for group counselling can be made from an initial consultation or by your counsellor if you are already receiving individual counselling.
Referral for individual counselling on campus or in the community may be made from an initial consultation appointment based on a student’s concerns, goals, circumstances, and readiness to engage in this more intensive level of support. Counselling Services provides primarily short-term counselling. Students requiring long-term support are referred to community resources.
Students who are members of the UBC AMS GSS Student Health and Dental Plan can also access short-term individual counselling as well as personal coaching directly through Empower Me. To contact Empower Me students can:
Family doctors at Student Health Service can connect you with specialized care options or specialist referrals to help you take care of your mental and physical health.
Psychiatrists provide a thorough assessment of your mental health, a customized treatment plan to help address serious mental health concerns, and evaluation.
Referral for psychiatric can be made from a doctor in Student Health Service.
UBC's wellness professionals are committed to providing respectful and supportive services for all students.
Finding the right person to speak with is important. Please let us know if you have a request regarding the specific wellness professional you'd like to see, including gender or cultural background, or if you've already been speaking with a wellness professional and would like to speak with someone else.
We value the respectful recognition of Aboriginal history, culture, traditional values, stories, and healing practices that support counselling alongside the use of western therapeutic approaches. Aboriginal students can access initial consultation appointments at either our Brock Hall Counselling Services site or the First Nations Longhouse.
Aboriginal self-identification and Counselling Services
Please note that Aboriginal self-identification is helpful for our UBC counselling services staff to be made aware of as we can then ensure we offer Aboriginal UBC students every option available for service, which includes potentially visiting with an Aboriginal counsellor and/or arranging an appointment at our location at the First Nations House of Learning. If you have any questions about Aboriginal self-identification and counselling services we encourage you to speak to a wellness advisor or counsellor at one of our centres. Aboriginal self-identification is not used for any purpose other than to allow us to better serve Aboriginal students at UBC, and we look forward to meeting with you.
All of our counsellors are experienced in providing sexual assault counselling and are available to support students. If you need an emergency appointment regarding a sexual assault, please let the counselling team know when you contact them.
Counselling is available at the Oak Street campus for UBC undergraduate and graduate students completing programs at Children's and Women's Health Centre of BC.

If hospitalization is required to treat your mental health concerns, a UBC Manager of Student Support Services may be available to provide additional support. With your consent, they can help you liaise with your academic program at UBC and help you connect with resources after you’re discharged.
UBC wellness professionals strive to work closely together to provide you with the most effective services to help you meet your unique needs. When you meet with a Wellness Professional for the first time, you will complete a Consent to Share Information form in which you have the option of consenting to information sharing among UBC wellness professionals in Counselling Services, Student Health Service, Access and Diversity and Student Support Services so you have an integrated system of support.
