3M National Student Fellowship

About the award

The 3M National Student Fellowship honours up to 10 full-time diploma and undergraduate students at Canadian post-secondary institutions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and innovation in their lives and at their college or university. These students embrace a vision of quality education that enhances their academic experience and beyond.  Awards are coordinated through the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE).

The award consists of:

  • An award of $2,000
  • Certificate and recognition at the annual Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) conference in June, to participate in a 3M National Student Fellows Conference Summit
  • Coverage of all costs for conference registration, travel, and accommodation to attend the annual STLHE conference
  • 2-year membership to the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
  • Letter from STLHE President and 3M Canada to their identified institutional leader and to the individual awarded
  • Recognition in STLHE and 3M Canada social media, and partnering media, such as Maclean’s and University Affairs

Eligibility requirements

You must meet all of the following requirements before applying:

  • You're enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree or college program at a post-secondary Canadian institution, as defined by UBC.
  • You've completed at least 1 full term of study at the time of nomination.
  • You have not previously received a 3M student fellowship.

In recognition of the systemic conditions of disadvantage in higher education and society, the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) encourages nominations of members of groups that have been historically disadvantaged and marginalized, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, Indigenous peoples of North America, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and those who identify as women and/or 2SLGBTQI.

How to apply

To apply, you will need the following: 

  • Your completed application
  • A nomination letter and additional letters of support
  • A copy of your transcript
  • A statement from the UBC VP Students

Application timeline

Time period Description
Early November to January

Applications usually open in mid-fall and close in January. Check the STLHE website for yearly deadlines.

Early January

3 weeks before the award deadline, applicants must submit their completed application package, transcript, and letters of nomination and support to the VP Students Office for review.

Applications will be reviewed within 10 to 14 days. A statement from the VP Students Office will be provided to all students who meet the eligibility criteria set out by STHLE. You may also receive feedback on ways you can strengthen your application.

Students can then add the VP Students statement to their application package and submit the full application directly to STLHE.

April

Winners are contacted by the 3M and STLHE Presidents. Unsuccessful nominees will also be informed by email.
