Gwyneth and J.T. Sandy Memorial Award in Surgical Oncology

Awards totalling $5,500 have been made available annually through a gift from the Gwyneth and J.T. Sandy Memorial Fund for outstanding medical residents in the Department of Surgery who have shown leadership and demonstrated an interest in surgical oncology. Dr. Gwyneth J. Sandy grew up in Red Deer, Alberta and received her medical degree from the University of Manitoba. She served as President of the BC and Yukon Division of the Canadian Cancer Society from 1978 to 1981 and as Director of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Dr. John Trevor J.T. Sandy (1928-2015) was born in Cavan Township, Ontario and completed his medical degree at University of Western Ontario. He completed his internship and a residency in general surgery at Vancouver General Hospital, where he continued to work as a surgeon until he retired in 1993. He joined the UBC Faculty of Medicine in 1971, where he trained and mentored generations of medical students before his retirement as a Professor Emeritus in 1994. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Surgery.
