Biking to campus

The UBC Life Commuter Guide

Vancouver is a super bike-friendly city (despite all the hills) and biking is a popular way to get to UBC.

Bike routes

This City of Vancouver map shows all of the bike routes in the city and will help you plan your ride to campus. With 4 main roads that lead straight into UBC, you’ll be able to find a route no matter where you start your journey.

If you want to bring your bike to campus without riding the whole way, you can put your bike on the front of buses. It’s a simple process (even if it may seem intimidating). Check out the demonstration below.

Locking up your bike

There are a few options for you to keep your bike safely locked while on campus.

Bike lockers are personal, enclosed storage providing the safest option for securing your bike. There are 200 around campus and they're available for rent at $10/month plus a $45 deposit. Fill out this form to request a locker!

Shared bike cages are in 10 parkades across campus and they are free to use. All you have to do is fill out this form to register and gain access through your UBCcard. You can do this at any time, but spots fill up quickly.

There are also simple bike racks scattered around campus for you to lock your bike up but ensure you use a sturdy lock (no cable locks!).

Bike Kitchen

A program of the Alma Mater Society (AMS) Bike Co-op, the Bike Kitchen is UBC’s non-profit, full-service community bike shop, where you can find lots of services and supports for your 2-wheeled chariot. They sell bikes made from old parts for reasonable prices and can teach you how to fix your own (or fix it with/for you).

Because the Bike Kitchen is part of your AMS, you actually support them in part through your student fees. Check out other services that the AMS provides!

Bike shares

AMS Purple and Yellow

Another AMS Bike Co-op initiative is the student-run “Purple and Yellow” bike share. With a fleet of these bikes available across campus for use by members of the co-op, they’re a great option if you need an easy way to get from one class to another (sometimes that can be a 20-minute walk, so a bike is helpful!). To gain access to these bikes you can volunteer with the Bike Co-op and become a member, or buy a $15 membership.

HOPR

As of September 2019, there will be 200 brand new HOPR bikes on campus at UBC. Membership is only $15/month for students (less if you get the annual plan) and rides start at just $1.

It's super easy to use—just sign up on the app (available on the App Store or Google Play), scan the QR code on your bike of choice, and get moving.

Biking to and at UBC is a great way to get around and get in some fitness! Keep in mind that pedestrians and cyclists share a lot of the same paths on campus. So if you’re biking, always slow down, use caution, and be aware.

Happy cycling!
