Get wet, get wild in the 5th annual Polar Bear Swim

The Calendar’s annual Polar Bear Swim is back.

Take part in this UBC tradition by putting on your swimsuit and running into the Pacific Ocean on the last day of classes. This epic, truly west coast experience is something you’ll definitely want to check off the bucket list.

  • When is it? Friday, December 1
  • Where is it? Wreck Beach
  • What time is it? Arrive at 3:00 pm. The official countdown begins at 3:30 pm.
  • What to bring? Clothing you can wear into the ocean (ie. swimsuits, crazy costumes, a wetsuit). Bring towels, warm jackets, and other pieces of warm clothing for after the swim.
  • Why should you come? Take advantage of our amazing campus location (who else has a beach right on campus?) and participate in this unique stress reliever before finals start. You’ll create memories that you can share for years to come.

I’ll be out there, despite my normal avoidance of anything cold, because in 6 months time I will be walking across the stage about to face the ‘real’ world.

There won’t be these types of opportunities anymore to let loose and yell ‘UBC’ at the top of my lungs before plunging into the freezing ocean with hundreds of fellow students.

So I expect to see you out there alongside me. Even if you’re not running into the ocean, come along and cheer those of us brave (and crazy) enough to do so. What else will you be doing on the last day of classes…studying?

If you need an extra push, watch this video from last year’s Polar Bear Swim. See how fun it was? Doesn’t look cold at all…
